A Sri Lankan delegation met with the U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer on 22 April, 2025, at the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office in Washington D.C.
The visit, carried out on the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, aimed to advance trade relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, the delegation handed over official communications from the Government of Sri Lanka and updated Ambassador Greer on the nation’s past economic challenges and the steps taken toward recovery.
They emphasised Sri Lanka’s strong commitment to working with the U.S. to reduce the trade deficit and eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers.
Ambassador Greer expressed appreciation for the proposals presented and conveyed hope for the swift commencement of negotiations to achieve a fair and equitable trade agreement.
Later that day, the Sri Lankan team held further discussions with a U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) delegation led by Assistant USTR for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch and Director for South Asia Emily Ashby. Both parties agreed to continue talks with the goal of finalizing a bilateral trade agreement in the shortest possible time.
The USTR, led by a Cabinet-level official, oversees U.S. trade policy and negotiations worldwide, playing a key role in shaping international trade relations.
